That sentence makes me smile,
as it brings to mind the sweetness of ~
Craft. Children. Creativity.
Mindfulness. Quiet. Hand-craft.
Play. Fun. Wonder.
And now the world has been blessed with a book of just that title.

has been enjoyed by many of us for a few years now.
The author, whose words and work I find beautiful, colourful
and inspirational, is dear Margaret Bloom.
Her new book "Making Peg Dolls", is just wonderful.
The book is filled with beautiful photographs, diagrams and illustrations
amongst it's 192 pages and hardback cover.
There are patterns for over 60 different dolls plus accessories,
each with easy to follow-step by-step instructions.
...I asked my boys to each choose their favourite page.

We haven't made a peg doll yet, but I'm always so smitten by them when I see one. If it's a peg doll, we love it! There's something inherently gorgeous about them; perhaps its' their petite proportions. (BTW, the dragon and knight set in the book definitely caught my eye!) xo P
ReplyDeleteI think my favourite is the flower fairies in all their many splendid varieties, but especially Dandelions! I used to find a nice mossy section of garden and make my own little flower fairies with (most often) dandelions, leaves and sticks when I was little, so dandelion themed peg dolls remind me of those happy memories. Plus the seed heads are great for wish making, even now I'm grown :)
ReplyDeleteWe hacen't made peg dolls before but would love to! I have always been drawn to their cuteness...I think it would be a great home school project for my 2 boys, to make some 'mystical' dolls to live in the wooden castle in the boys room :)
ReplyDeleteI remember having old style clothes pin dolls. I had one that was little red riding hood. So cute with her pointy hood. I would love to make the fairies or the carrot peg dolls. So adorable.

ReplyDeleteLovely! We haven't made many peg dolls but my favorite is one Miss 4 and I made together about a year ago. She drew the little face on herself and although it isn't the prettiest peg doll, it certainly is the most loved. Hannah @ Paint On The Ceiling

I loved handstitching monarch and luna moth wings for my contribution! My son is loving his Mexican luchador peg dolls right now, but we've also made Yoda and Chewbacca, Dorothy and her three Oz friends, and so on and so on. The inspiration is limitless!

ReplyDeleteThis book looks so inspirational!! I love peg dolls and have made several, of varying quality, for my kids. My favorite was a little family set - just painted - I made for my daughter when the baby was born, but I'm smitten by how they can look so different by adding felt.

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautifully inspiring book and such an accessible art form for families to create together! My favourite peg dolls would be a set of the Three Billy Goats Gruff so my nearly 3 year old and myself could act out the story together. Th possibilities are endless and I know that once I get around to making my first set of peg dolls, will be hooked and iit will be a very fun hobby for myself and my daughter!

I have a few favorite peg dolls I've made for my daughter, all based on her interests: the Tomten (from Astrid Lindgren's book), the characters in Pooh, and Nerissa and Katryna Nields (her favorite musicians).

I have created several ones mainly with felt and without features. However, they are not even close to Margaret's creations. Hers are amazing and it would be nice to learn how to make such whimsical creations together with my kids.

ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying Margret's blog for a few years. Last summer she hosted a peg doll swap. I received a little butterfly peg doll. It is my favorite one. During this exchange I created little peg people that looked like the baby peg people fisher price made in the 70's. Recently, I found myself wondering where I could buy old-fashioned clothes pegs...so that my son and I could make some peg dolls together.
ReplyDeleteMy son turns most the objects and animals he plays with into Papa, Mummy and Baby. I would like to make him a family of peg dolls. And then hopefully my husband and I will make him some sort of doll house (a tree-house, perhaps?) to go with these dolls for Christmas this year.

ReplyDeleteI like the little fairies that are made from silk flower petals for the skirt and wings and wool for the hair. My favourite peg dolls have no features - Waldorf style - but my kids usually insist that I draw a face on. :) Would love a peek at this book for some inspiration!

To choose a favourite is difficult, but my 7 year old daughter, who always enjoys making and creating,loves fairies and flowers (as I do!).
