When Kelly of Happy Whimsical Hearts said she would like to make a wooden Scarecrow for our joint giveaway, I became very excited.
Not only because everything Kelly seems to touch with a wood-burning tool turns out wonderfully. But also because it triggered my memory of another crafty Mama, who had designed an interactive woolen vegie patch some time ago.
I've always been enamoured by her creation and thought here was my incentive to make my own version, for the giveaway. Happily Sara gave me her permission.
The top layer is 3mm felt, hand-dyed brown with plant dyes. The bottom layer is Holland pure new wool felt. Sewn in between, to keep the mound's shape, is a piece of thick cardboard.
I have cut out spaces in the cardboard for the vegetables, which are held in place by
the slits cuts into the felt either side (once it was sewn).
The vegetables were wet felted and I used stranded cotton thread and wool felt for the leaves and seedlings.
I really love how it turned out, and so do my boys, aged 4 & 6.
They've asked me to make another one.
We'll see.
